As parents, we naturally want our kids to live full, happy and successful lives. Yet all children struggle with anxiety at some point. When it hits your child, it can be hard to know when and how to step in.
Your child is struggling. As a mom, your heart probably hurts to see them going through this. And you’d do anything to make it go away. Unfortunately, wishing it away is not going to solve anything. There are, however, three specific things you can do to really help a child dealing with mental health issues – and help yourself and your whole family in the process.
Occasional stress is a disruptive but normal part of a child’s life: whether it’s getting ready on time to catch the bus, having a lot of homework, or starting a new school. Children often have a difficult time managing their stress and need some guidance, which, as adults with experience, we can often provide if we take the time. Ideas like outdoor play, reading time, talking about the challenge, and taking some quiet time are all familiar ways we can teach them.
Without a doubt, schools and their staff play a huge role in children’s lives. Often the adults in a child’s school life spend more time each day with our children than we do. Because one out of five children will experience mental illness, it is critical that parents and caregivers understand how a school can influence children’s mental health and, if necessary, provide support services for children experiencing mental illness.

Few people – if any – would argue that the mental health of our children is not important. Quite the opposite, children’s mental health can have a profound effect not only on their quality of life, but also on the quality of the communities that surround them.
